7/8/2023 0 Comments My own words rbg![]() My Own Words is a new collection of Ginsburg’s lectures and writings on everything from women’s rights to opera and the law. Known as “Notorious RBG” by her admirers for her principled stand on civil rights and women’s issues, Ginsburg takes her legal writing seriously. “And I use the ‘read aloud’ test to check whether I have succeeded.” ![]() Ginsburg has said that Nabokov greatly influenced her legal writing: “I seek the right word and word order,” she explained. Being much more than all this, style constitutes an intrinsic component or characteristic of the author’s personality.” In his famous lectures, Nabokov stressed the careful selection of the perfect words, but also taught his students that style “is not a tool, it is not a method, it is not a choice of words alone. In 1989, actor Christopher Plummer portrayed the author lecturing about Kafka for PBS. ![]() “He stood alone, not comparable to any other lecturer.” In addition to being a brilliant novelist, Nabokov was also known as an inspiring professor. “He was magnetically engaging,” Ginsburg told the magazine Culture Trip earlier this year. One of my favorite little known facts about Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is that she was a student in Vladimir Nabokov’s European Literature class at Cornell when she was an undergraduate in the 1950s. ![]()

Far fetched results make funny effects at the end. The Legion of Super-Villains centers on Lex Luthor and another devious escape to flee the prison he's contained in. ![]() Hey, whatever works for simple stories, right? Overall interesting in the beginning, surprising in the middle, and a weird deflation with the wrap-up. ![]() Apparently the man in red and blue was willing to leave the Earth's surface and live underwater with Lori, but the end resulted in a strange twist that doesn't make complete sense. I've always enjoyed the rare story about Lori Lemaris, and this one really delves as much as this child-like collection can. The best is Superman's Mermaid Sweetheart. In one memorable passage, Sun-hee misunderstands an oblique warning from her Japanese friend and assumes that her uncle’s life is in danger. Food grows scarcer and the Koreans, long forbidden to study their own culture and language, now must take Japanese names. The Japanese had conquered Korea in 1910 and as the war looms their demands on the Koreans intensify. Their uncle is a source of concern because he publishes an underground, anti-Japanese newspaper. Sun-hee, in the last year of elementary school in 1940, loves studying and is an obedient daughter while older brother Tae-yul loves speed and machines. ![]() Telling their story in alternating voices, the two siblings offer complementary and sometimes different versions of events. Why did you choose the title EDGE OF ETERNITY? It’s a thrilling story and it’s our story, one that has touched us all either directly or through our parents or grandparents. I wanted to recapture the magic of WORLD WITHOUT END but, fond as I am of the Middle Ages, didn’t want to become a “medieval writer.” At some point, in trying to figure out how to do that, I thought of the twentieth century-the most dramatic and bloodthirsty century in the history of the human race an ongoing drama of war against oppressive regimes and of people struggling for independence. Remind us, where did the idea for the Century Trilogy come from? Why the 20th century? But readers have loved the trilogy and I’m very happy about it. I thought I might read some similar books by other authors and found that no one had ever tried to do this-which made it all the more daunting. When I embarked on the project I was not sure that I could tell the story of an entire century in fiction. With the Century Trilogy, you set out to write a sweeping historical epic of the twentieth century what does it feel like to have just complete it? ![]() ![]() And everyone is gnashing their teeth, biting at the bit, to get at it. ![]() EDGE OF ETERNITY, by Ken Follett, bursts into the publishing world on Tuesday, September 16th. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Found In A Bottle A Descent Into The Maelstrom Von Kempelen And His Discovery The Gold-Bug The Facts In The Case Of M.
